Let's re-imagine the future of education together.

1) TEACH AND LEARN

The real backbone of the HLAB experience are the seminars and as a Global-Side mentor, much of your preparation before the beginning of Summer School will be focused on planning and developing your seminar. The topic, contents, and assignments are all entirely up to you! If the idea of creating an entire course on your own seems a bit daunting, don’t worry, you’ll have plenty of support along the way from your Seminar Partner as well as the rest of the HLAB team. If you are curious to know more about how to develop your seminar, you can check out our tips and tricks for seminars on our resources page.

While teaching a seminar is a major component of the HLAB experience, you will find yourself at both sides of the learning process during the summer school. As a mentor, you will find yourself learning from the many speakers that come to visit each site and interact with the students, as well as the high school students themselves through various group discussions and workshops that will occur throughout the week.

2) JOIN A GLOBAL FAMILY

Over the course of your time in Japan, you'll be living, working, traveling, and relaxing with some truly amazing people. Summer school is just two weeks long, but the relationships created during the program can last a lifetime! Your students and everyone else who comes together will make up a family you can always count on, whether in Japan or elsewhere in the world.

3) EXPERIENCE JAPANESE CULTURE

While the academic side of HLAB is definitely a major part of each summer school, you'll find that the schedule for each location is filled with activities that present many opportunities for you to interact with locals, attend cultural events, and experience the various sites. Our site locations in Obuse, Tokushima, and Miyagi-Onagawa boast many unique cultural elements and traditions that foreigners and Japanese alike don't often experience. Our main Tokyo site carries with it distinctly Japanese cultural experiences - the building in which the program is held is a type of traditional communal lodging known as a ryokan (旅館). Additionally, living with the students that you teach, constantly interacting with the Japanese university students, and everything else in between will make you see Japan in a whole new light!

If you're interested in exploring Japan beyond HLAB, plan to arrive before the start of the program or leave the exploration for after summer school.  Don't hesitate to ask for tips and recommendations - your HLAB family will gladly give you guidance!
