HLAB MiYAGI-OnAGAWA 2022

Picture
HLAB finally comes to Onagawa. Located in the northern part of Japan, Tohoku has been renowned for its diverse harvest from the ocean and the mountains. During the Heian period (around CE 800~1200), Hiraizumi, the capital city of Tohoku was the second largest and flourished city next to Heian-kyo (Kyoto). Ever since the Edo period, as one of the foremost rice-producing area, Tohoku has produced many cultural traditions unique to agriculture, forestry and fishing. 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami provoked great grief among the world. In this 3 years after quake, people in Tohoku are gradually recovering from the aftermath of profound sorrow.

While we still follow the HLAB structure of seminar, workshop, forum and free interaction, the Tohoku program places a greater emphasis on incorporating the local community. There are ample opportunities during the program to explore the town, interact with many local people, and even visit local elementary and middle schools. The town government and townspeople are extremely invested in the summer program, so from day one you will be welcomed into the town as a member of the same team.
